February 21, 2004Argh..Sorry for the lack of updates, I know this spam blog is oh so exciting. Starting sometime next week I am going to start publishing the mail sent to donotreply.com by companies that refuse to fix their software. University software maker SCT who makes pipeline software for many major universities is trying to say the heavy use of do.not.reply@donotreply.com by their customers is not their fault, they just used that as an example in their documentation. Never mind that the word example should have set them off, that example.com should have been used. And I guess never mind that they are promoting the use of an outside domain to handle bounces, opening up a giant privacy/security hole. They have since said they will change that in their documentation and send a letter suggesting that universities stop using it. But what did this oversight already do? Well pretty much if you are on this list I have probably read some of your mail. Most of it not too exciting, but a few fun squabbles over who is getting funding and who is getting to teach classes next fall. I guess one of the requirements for teaching a class is not, not replying to an email addressed do.not.reply@donotreply.com. Right now SCT clients make up between 3-5% of all the mail we handle every day, with one day spiking at over 15%. When I pointed this out to them and said that this was one of the reason we recently had to upgrade our server, they balked at any compensation. I had to pay $400 in setup fees and an extra $150 a month for our new server. So what the hell, if I am going to be getting mail from Yale, my alma mater Kent State, Tennessee State, and many other universities, I might as well share it with the rest of you. And a little side note to the entire country of Brazil. Why oh why Brazil? Why have you become the #1 spammer for us? You have given us so much... okay, i can't really think of what you have given us besides some supermodels, but really that makes up for anything else. So why now have you turned on us and become a haven for spammers? This week Brazil has become the #1 spammer on our servers. |
